Vietnamese Folk Games Day at UC San Diego

On Saturday, (May 17, 2025) with the support from the Linguistic Department, the Vietnamese students and community gathered at the Sixth College East Lawn for a vibrant two-hour celebration of Vietnamese culture through traditional folk games.

Organized by the student in the Advanced Vietnamese class LIHL134P and the lecturer Hoan Nguyen, the event featured a variety of nostalgic and interactive games such as tạt lon (can toss), kéo co (tug of war), nhảy dây tập thể (group jump rope), nhảy bao bố ném ngô IQ (sack race and corn toss IQ), and oẳn tù tì kết hợp nhảy lò cò (rock-paper-scissors with hopscotch). Laughter, teamwork, and friendly competition filled the air as students worked together to complete each challenge.

In addition to the games, the “Tiệm Ăn Vặt Tuổi Thơ” snack booth transported attendees back to their childhoods with popular Vietnamese treats like kẹo AmiraSting, and Bánh Tráng Trộn.

Students shared overwhelmingly positive feedback after the event, describing it as “fun, exciting, and meaningful.” Many mentioned how much they enjoyed the chance to connect with others, learn about Vietnamese traditions in a hands-on way, and relive memories through childhood snacks and playful games.
